The Shield è una serie televisiva statunitense di genere poliziesco creata nel 2002, dai toni cupi e dalle
situazioni particolarmente violente. Tratta di droga, omicidi, ricatti, corruzione.

Ideato e prodotto da
Shawn Ryan, la serie si basa su un distretto di polizia di un immaginario quartiere malfamato di Los Angeles, Farmington
(probabilmente si alludeva a "Fullerton", effettivamente esistente e vicino a un quartiere di nome "Grove", come nel
telefilm), dove la giustizia deve fare quotidianamente i conti con la violenza, la corruzione e la mancanza di risorse.
Il protagonista, Vic Mackey, è un detective dai modi bruschi e spesso violenti, bugiardo, e dalle spiccate tendenze
criminali, ma che ottiene quasi sempre ciò che vuole. La sua particolarità è di venire spesso a patti con la
malavita, talvolta non per scopi criminali, ma per trovare un equilibrio di potere ed evitare inutili spargimenti di
sangue nelle strade del quartiere; altre volte, invece, lo fa proprio per guadagno personale (anche se c'è da
precisare che quasi sempre, però, il "bottino" viene utilizzato per i tre figli, di cui due autistici e che
richiedono scuole e cure costose). Questo comportamento ambiguo gli procura incessanti attriti con i colleghi e
soprattutto con i superiori.
